New England Document Box

New England Document Box

Clear pine box in red wash. 19th century. 20" wide, 11 1/2" deep, and 8 1/4" tall. A simple country box such as this was a common object in the early New England home. These dove tailed boxes often held important documents, which were kept under lock and key. Keys were often lost and locks were removed for entry. In this example a piece of tin has been placed over the area where the lock was removed. Being an early box, it is constructed using square nails and wooden shoe pegs. The size of this box makes it desirable for stacking.
