White and Black Checkerboard

White and Black Checkerboard

Checkerboard. Found in Pennsylvania. Late 19th century. Constructed of a single hand planed pine board, this simple country checkerboard in dry white and black paint remains in great original as found surface and condition. The board measures 15" square. Wood cleats nailed to the backside were used in the board's construction. Attached to prevent warping, they are also the cause of minor age cracks due to shrinkage in the pine board over the years.
