Coach Painted Chess Board

Coach Painted Chess Board

Finely decorated game board. New England origin. c.1870. A single pine board measuring near 16" square and 7/8" thick has been professionally painted no doubt for the purpose of playing chess. Green and gold squares are separated by thin red lines. A gold filigree border surrounds the playing field. The outermost border as well as the sides are finished in gold. The back remains in its original black primer coat. Not visible in the pictures is the very fine crazing covering the board's entire surface. There is wear and minor surface scratches to the original paint.
