Checkerboard under Glass
Checkerboard. 19th century. Midwestern origin. This colorful game board is constructed in a most unusual manner. Mounted under glass, a checkerboard painted on what appears to be newspaper has been encased in a thick pine enclosure. Hand planed and square nailed, the heavy enclosure measures less than 15" square and is almost 2" deep. The painted surface well preserved under early glass has achieved a desirable crackle throughout. This visually pleasing game board is unique. It is not nor should not be confused with reverse paint on glass.
